Some people wonder whether God really has a sense of humor or not, even to the point of questioning whether it is wrong or not to laugh or joke. Is God really as serious as we make him out to be?

Here's how I see it...

As Paul quoted from poets, "We are His offspring" (ACTS 17:28). We, as God's creations, were created in God's image; thus, a number of traits are also inherited from our Creator. These inherited traits can range from talents to behaviors.

A lot of what we are able to do says a lot in itself about who we are. And some of these things may also clue us in to what God is like.

Here are some examples:

Look around and see the beauty of nature. Look at all the different kinds of animals, the many different plants, even the clouds in the sky. You're looking at God's artwork. So yes, God is an artist. What does that say about Him? It says that God is very creative. He expresses His creativity through all those things. Those are His designs, so that also makes Him a designer and an inventor. He invented the sun and the moon and the stars.

See the artistic talents of people? It is one of God's gifts. God gifted people with creativity, and this is reflected in our Creator. You could say that God IS creativity, for creating is what He does best!

Is God a writer? Yes, He is. He is a writer who doesn't directly use a pen. The entire universe has many stories to tell. There's a history behind everything. God gifts writers with the talent to write and to put something into words. Where is God's inspired work? Look at the Bible! God is a storyteller and an inspiration. You could even say that God is adventurous.

Is God a doctor? Surely, for He can heal all kinds of pain; physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. And He is the very best therapist! He is the best listener. He is very caring and nurturing. And He provides nourishment for His living creations. He is a provider, a parent, a counselor, a teacher...

God is also a judge and a law enforcer. He is righteous and just and does not like crime. He knows how to rightfully punish. He is also merciful and forgiving, for He always has his arms wide open for anyone who desires to come to Him.

Now, let's jump ahead.
Is God a comedian? Does He have a sense of humor?

Well, let's look at what laughter is and what it does.

Laughter is an automatic physiological response. It is a natural response to something perceived as humorous. When somebody laughs, a smile is formed on the face. Sometimes laughter can be "contagious", in that it triggers a response in others surrounding that laughter.

There are benefits to laughter. Laughter can be used to relieve stress, deflect anger, and even help form bonds with others. Sometimes when we're feeling down, a good laugh can pick us back up! Sometimes when we've been frightened or startled, we can laugh to deflect that sense of fear. It feels good to laugh.

Have you ever seen a baby laugh? Do you see the way the baby smiles and giggles? Do you see how happy the baby is when he or she laughs? It's an expression of enjoyment, and it's fun! I bet God smiles when He sees a baby laugh!

People's bodies can be so sensitive to tickling. Some people really enjoy being tickled. Tickling triggers laughter. And how fun it is when two good friends or relatives tease each other playfully with a good tickle!

Scientists had done a study on the response of rats to tickling and discovered that even rats create a response very much like laughter. They used a bat detector, a device used for bringing higher frequency sounds into a range audible to our ears. The rats would be gently flipped onto their backs and tickled on their bellies, and they would create vocalizations the same way that a person does when being tickled. Laughing rats! And yes, it was discovered that this response was, indeed, a positive one. The rats enjoyed it!

(For the video link on the rat tickling study, read my comments in the Description section below this deviation.)

And how we enjoy entertaining each other with playful silliness and enjoy the company of those in which such fun-filled laughter comes! Laughter becomes a helpful link in bonding with others.

Surely God has created laughter for a purpose. God creates what is good. Perhaps God doesn't want us to take life way too seriously. He would want us to learn how to loosen up a bit and not be so tense. Laughter is one of those things that can help us take the edge off the seriousness of life. After all, God loves cheerfulness!

As with other actions, there is the other side. We also know that not all laughter is the result of something lighthearted or innocent. Some people laugh when cruelty is done to people or animals. Some people laugh over dirty jokes or violence. Some people laugh out of ridicule and mockery. And some people may crack jokes inappropriately. God surely would not laugh about those kinds of things. God is not evil and does not enjoy wickedness.

But just because something can be done wrongly or cruelly or sinfully doesn't mean that the action itself as a function is necessarily a bad thing. The reasons why we laugh, as well as what we perceive to be funny, can be a reflection of our hearts and attitudes.

As with love, happiness, having compassion, and expressing righteous anger, God may very well have a sense of humor. Being created in God's image, our ability to laugh may also imply that God can laugh too. All of God's qualities are good. Therefore, God would know very well how to laugh, and it would be good.

So is God a comedian? Perhaps so. You can very well say that God can be humorous. See how "nutty" people can be!
I have to say, it is no understatement to call laughter "medicine". Call it cliché if you want. But I do believe that laughter is a kind of "medicine" from God. Laughter is surely a gift from our awesome Creator!

Praise Be to ABBA YAHWEH! I was going to post something witty, but someone already brought up the platypuses. Did you know only the males have venemous barbs on their hind legs? Wonder how potent platypus venom is?

Guys lemme tell ya a story...

Ok, so I'm Roman Catholic. We go to confession. (Let's not get into a war over this, people.) My brother and I were going to confession one Saturday, and there happened to be a wedding just ending. The wedding party had been using the confessional as their little area to stash all of their stuff. So, my brother and I arrived, shook the priest's hand, and went into the church. I had planned on my brother going in first. He had forgotten the Act of Contrition prayer, (which every Catholic should have memorized by the way...) and I said, ''Oh that's no problem!'' as I walked into the confessional to show him that the Act of Contrition was in there for forgetful Catholics. "See? Here it is!'' And before I knew it he had closed the door on me with a fiendish grin and cackling laugh, saying,''well, you're already in there....BWAHAHAHAHA!!!'' (Yes, I went to confession behind the screen although I had shaken his hand 3 minutes earlier.) Well, just as I finished, and he went in, the wedding party was coming to get all their stuff. He pushed me into the confessional, and ended up getting four people walk in on him as he was making his confession.

''And my greatest sin Father, is...''

*person walks in*
''Hey can you hand me that purse?''

*person leaves*

*awkward pause between priest and penitent*

''where were we now? Oh, right...''

*second person walks in*

''hey can you hand me that slushie?''

*person stands there drinking slushie*

''Oh don't let me disturb you, go on, go on, this is interesting.''

After he was finally finished, and 2 other people had walked in on him, I stood there and laughed and laughed...then realized I had also photo-bombed the wedding. Somebody was talking a picture of the bride and groom at the altar, and I was standing around in jeans, sneakers and a T-shirt looking really confused, awkward and out of place in the background. They're going to be looking through that album a year from now and say, ''Wait who's that bum? I don't remember inviting she from your side of the family?'' i was just this weirdo who appeared at the very end of the wedding. time the priest's phone went off in the confessional, hehe.

Well that's that! Sorry for the long comment!

Jesus laughed. He is gods son. We laugh too. So we are comedians!! We are made from gods likeness. He loved us and made us this way for a reason. We have to laugh. It Is our medicine. :)

There are 6 words for Joyous outbursts in the Hebrew and another 5 in Greek. In the book of John alone Jesus was described as using every one of them from chuckling at the Pharacees to Excitedly Jumping, Spinning, and Shrieking at the return of the 70. If I understand correctly, if he did it, we can do it.

Awesome study. Well organized. Great Job.

I couldn't agree more! When we laugh, it makes God smile (and, bonus, makes the devil angry 'cause it means we're not giving into his lie that everything is horrible and hopeless). God is creator of everything--including humor! :)

"After meeting god (yeah, we'll put that in quotation marks)" I was told "forget what you think you know and look for god in the world. In things that are simple, universal, and true."

Comedy was my first discovery.

I love this picture! It's so out of the box; most pictures Christ-related are of him on the cross looking out of place peaceful, him suffering on the cross, or just looking serious. Can I suggest you listen to Mark Driscoll's sermon about God's humor, it's very funny and supports what you're saying.
